Japan takes retaliatory measures for installation of comfort women statue at Busan (Jan. 6, 2017)

Despite repeated demands of the Japanese government to remove the comfort women statue that stands in front of the Japanese consulate at Busan on the grounds that such installation is clear violation of Article 22 of Vienna Convention and against the principles of 2015 Japan - S. Korea Bilateral Agreement over Comfort Women Issue, it was tacit approval that S. Korean government has given to the unlawful activity.

The outrage over such lukewarm attitude is so intense that the Japanese government finally takes the following four retaliatory measures. Chief Cabinet Secretary Y. Suga made the measures pubic on Jan. 6.

  1. Temporary return of Japanese ambassador and consulate to Japan

  2. Non-participation of consulate employees in events relating to the Busan Municipality government

  3. Suspension of negotiation regarding Japan-S. Korea Currency Swapping

  4. Putting off all high-level bilateral meetings on economic issues between the two governments
Timing of withdrawal of such measures was not made clear. Y. Suga said the Government of Japan would make the decision of withdrawal taking into account all circumstances comprehensively.”
